How Might Self-Driving Vehicles Make Driving More Pleasant?

The boring traditional driving is easy to make drivers tired, and even causes traffic accidents. The research and development of self-driving vehicles (SDVs) are committed to replacing human driving by improving safety, reliability, convenience and efficiency, so as to reduce the occurrence of traffic accidents and make “passengers” get a better experience. “The global traffic fatal risk was estimated as 17.4 per 100,000 in 2014 (WHO, 2015)” (Liu et al., 2019, p. 321). The potential of SDVs in saving people’s lives is noteworthy.

How can Big Data Principles Resolve the Limitations of Machine Learning?

A math student who is taught about a certain subject is then given a set of several practice problems and an answer key. As the student works through the problem set they reflect upon the accuracy of their answers and progressively become better at solving said problems. While the number of “practice problems” is substantially greater, and in some cases there is no initial teaching, Machine learning (ML) functions very similarly to the math student. ML is a subfield of computer science which focuses on the use of data and algorithms to imitate human learning [11]. Unlike its human counterpart, however, it is relatively easy to produce an objective assessment of the faults and bottlenecks of machine learning.

What Research is Being Done to Make Additive Manufacturing an Industrial Standard?

Additive manufacturing is the process of building a part layer by layer from the ground up. The consumer market already has printers using this process to make plastic prototypes. A computer CAD model is sliced into horizontal layers stacked ontop of each other. Each of these layers is a 2-D cross section of the part being manufactured. The printer starts by extruding melted plastic in the shape of the first 2-D cross section. It then moves up to repeat the same process with the second 2-D cross section on top of the first. Since the printhead is extruding melted plastic, the second cross section bonds with the first. The process is repeated until all the layers of the CAD model are printed.

How Is CRISPR, Gene Editing Technology, Contributed to Sustainable Food Systems and Agricultural Development?

Food science and technology have substantially contributed to new and efficient ways for producing crops. With growing populations all over the globe, there is a dire need for more sustainable food systems in order to keep up with the demand for food. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates, that the world population will surpass 9.1 billion by year 2050, at which point the agricultural systems will not be able to supply enough food to feed everyone [1]. If we are not properly implementing green solutions, rising food prices, climate change, and crop failures are all realistic consequences for not taking this problem seriously.
